When I was doing team building sometimes we would work with high school and students of all ages. One of the topics or points that would come up often, almost as a laugh was the idea that if they are constantly telling their parents that they are responsible and can be trusted, then they probably aren’t. If they WERE responsible the concern wouldn’t have been expressed by the adults. Isn’t that so true?! If they are sitting there talking everyone into and convincing everyone that they do inhibit a particular character trait, they are wasting their time. Instead of talking about it, just do it and then nobody has to question it. If you are constantly tardy, the reason it will be addressed is because it is an issue. Same with if you are rude. Or a liar. Or my favorite… wise. I always get a chuckle when people say that they are self-proclaimed wise because Proverbs 26:12 rings in my head, “Do you see a man who is wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.” Remember that knowledge puffs up, but love builds up (1Cor 8:1).
Instead of wasting time trying to justify that you are a certain way, just be that way! It is harder to be punctual than to talk about being punctual. It is easier to talk about ways to not be lazy, it is harder to do the work to not be lazy. Actions speak louder than words, I know it’s not a bible verse but I think it is true. There are times when we need to stick up for our selves, provide clarification or something like that. That’s not what I am talking about. What I am talking about is people who walk around and claim all the Godly, biblical, positive words for themselves. We won’t be perfect, we won’t ever master everything. But just do yourself a favor and instead of talking about it, put your big girl pants on and do it. Remember, “When words are many, transgression is not lacking, but whoever restrains his lips is prudent.” Just close your mouth, ask the Lord for help and do what you need to do. It takes time to build a reputation, but a moment to destroy it. Noble Character is reserved for the few…that means not very many. And if you read this, pat yourself on the back and claim the title, you are probably mistaken. But by all means let your life prove me wrong!
