The Problem Areas

One of my favorite parenting books, next to the bible is a called Loving The Little Years by Rachel Jankovic. In the book she has a short chapter about the care of our bodies, she says,

“Our bodies are tools, not treasures. You should not spend your days trying to preserve your body in its eighteen-year-old form. Let it be used. By the time you die, you want to have a very dinged and dented body. Motherhood uses your body in the way that God designed it to be used. Those are the right kind of damages…We are not to treat our bodies like museum pieces. They were not given to us to preserve, they were given to us to use. So use it cheerfully, and maintain it cheerfully. You want to fix your body up in order to be able to use it some more. We should not be trying to fix it up to put it back on the shelf out of harm’s way or to try to make ourselves look like nothing every happened. Your body is a tool. Use it.”

Isn’t this just great truth?! When I use my body there are signs of wear and use and the parts that are used the most often show the signs of the most wear and require more care and attention. Other parts of my body aren’t used as often and don’t need such diligent regular care.Isn’t this the same with our homes? The parts that are used the most need to most attention and need repair the most often. There is a hutch in our kitchen that is the catchall space and it usually is a mess, in all humility, I provide a picture

The care of our spiritual house is likewise important and being aware of what the Lord sees when he sees into our hearts. Nothing can be hid from God, He sees the parts of my heart and personality that are on the forefront and used often and some parts that are hardly used at all and sitting there practically unused. What are some of the areas that could be well used or unused? Great question. How about prayer? How about Interacting God’s Word (meditating, reading, memorizing, applying)? How about Fruits of the Spirit (love, peace, joy, self control, etc.)? How about Gossip? How about encouragement? How about anger? Any of these areas can be well worn like the beautiful well worn wood handle of a hammer, or shiny and used. I need to be able to have the wisdom and knowledge about how to handle the tools that God has given me and the self control to not use some at all. The ones that are used the most are often what comes out first and in quick reach. Using the example of the hutch, there is a lot going on there! A lot of productive work, good things, beautiful things, but also there is garbage, things I don’t need anymore, things that don’t belong to me or are out of place. Colossians 3 reads,

Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming. In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator

There is benefit to taking the time to “survey the land” and see what needs attention or is lacking. Take a minute and clean it out, clean it off, put it away, mail it out, repent of it, pray for it or whatever. Just take a minute and do it. Look at your life, body, home, conversation, heart, relationships and see if there are “problem areas” that might need some attention. If you are using it often there is benefit for it to be in good working order. Remember the goal isn’t perfection, signs of use are ok (and encouraged!)

Here are a few steps to get started:

  1. Look at it specifically and objectively (a kitchen hutch, or your mouth, or your closet)
  2. What IS there currently?
  3. What is there that SHOULD be there?
  4. What is there that Should NOT be there?
  5. Does God’s Word say anything about this?
  6. What changes need to be made to make it useful and profitable?
  7. What needs to be repaired or strengthened?
  8. What habits need to be changed to ensure that what should not be there doesn’t return?
  9. Set your mind on things above and take action

By God’s grace, we will make progress for His glory and continually become something that is pleasing and useful to the Lord through the conviction and work of the Holy Spirit.

Love this post and love the hutch. What great questions to ask yourself! We are going on the Kaleo retreat soon and I hope to get some down time to stop and ask myself these intentional questions to get a better grip on how to be more productive and fruitful in 2016! Thanks for sharing!!!

Welcome

Welcome

I'm Katie, the blessed wife of Gavin and mom to my 6 kids. We live a full life with friends, family, our community, church and finding a new place to explore. I am first and foremost a child of God and am committed to glorifying God and making Christ known in the atmosphere of our home, the habits and disciplines of our days and the life that we emanate each day. I am far from perfect and I find myself falling short everyday. There is grace and fullness of life in the Bible, so I "repent, rejoice, and repeat."

This just needed a permanent place on the feed. Gw This just needed a permanent place on the feed. Gwen LOVES the movie White Christmas. The last 3 years she has watched it everyday from thanksgiving to Christmas. She just loves the whole thing and I think she’s adorable. Enjoy my little Gwen.

Thanksgiving books that we have on repeat! Which o Thanksgiving books that we have on repeat! Which ones are missing?! #thanksgivingbooks #thanksgivingbooksforkids
Today felt like a long day. Everyone woke up in Today felt like a long day.

Everyone woke up in a grouchy mood so we changed gears and went to a nature center.
Everything here is going well all things considered. Im learning about what it means to be satisfied in Christ alone. And truly living one day at a time. We are in total limbo as we are waiting longer than we planned. I’m preparing my heart for how to respond to unmet expectations and how to move forward.
I am beginning to wrap my head around what the holidays look like living in someone else’s house with none of the normal things that make the holidays feel “normal”.
We are praying our house would sell. We are fighting discouragement in that area.
The church and people here have been wonderful and we are happy to be here and hopeful about the future. We know this waiting is temporary, so figuring out how to create home and put down roots and cultivate faithfulness in someone else’s house is tricky. The kids are doing well and adjusting to a new place.
@longneckpumpkinfarm was a great morning outing! W @longneckpumpkinfarm was a great morning outing! We enjoyed the duck races, play structures, animals, campfire, slides, corn pit and so much more. The weather was crisp and spirits were bright. We ended up with 10 pumpkins to bring home so I think we are good for the season! What is your favorite pumpkin patch? We sure missed @sffbrentwood this year!

The weather in Colorado has been spectacular this The weather in Colorado has been spectacular this fall. We are trying to get the kids outdoors as much as possible and explore our new home. I think that the more they learn and see about the area the faster they will have a connection with it and fall in love with the area. It’s hard to care for and appreciate things that you haven’t seen or learned about! During this time of transition we are focusing on a few things as a family
🍁 getting outdoors everyday to play, for a walk or a local adventure it helps them (and us) get our geographical bearings and things start looking familiar
🙌🏻 connecting through conversation and a specific question of the day. Table topics and other lists of questions have generated great conversation. When prompted in the morning they think on it all day and it provides a touch point to circle back to
🔍 making observations and asking questions about the area keeps everyone curious and learning. The more we notice the farther it gets into our heart and mind
👋 talking to people while we are out, in the store, at the park or destination generally results in a great recommendation, a story or something else interesting
No I’m not engaged. 😂 just a moment to reflec No I’m not engaged. 😂 just a moment to reflect and celebrate small victories in life. I’ve made some lifestyle changes in the last week or so and I’m able to wear my wedding ring for the first time in more than a little while. Ricky is almost 2 😮 and I’m in a place mentally and physically to focus on my personal goals and loosing some weight has been on the top of that list. I’m thankful for my health and my body and all that it’s been capable of and endured. We’ve covered a lot of ground together and I look forward to going into the next decade in the best shape that I can be in! I’m down 9.5 pounds and look forward to so many more non scale victories along the way. My 40th is in 5 months and the best gift 🎁 I can give myself and my family is my health. @jenhix07 has been my biggest encouragement, inspiration and help! 🎉

Mom’s it’s not too late and hope is not lost. We get busy with children and life and school and we sacrifice so much for those that we love. It’s possible for you to reach your goals too. ❤️
